Drinking (Dodoitsu)
I was drinking in this bar.
From the corner of my eye
I saw this beautiful woman,
and she was my wife.

Dodoitsu is the name of a popular poetic form that appeared in the late-Edo period, but it also became a song style. It originates in a folk song of the Itako district named Itako-bushi. The gradual change to the present style was established by a singer of popular songs named Dodoitsubo Kasen (1796-1852).
The Dodoitsu is composed of a total of 27 syllables, in the structure 7/7/8/5. There is no rhyme scheme requirement.
An important feature of Dodoitsu is that it often contains some sense of humor to make people laugh, or at least smile. Most commonly, the first three lines of 7+7+8 try to tell a story drawing the listeners' attention, and then, the portion in the last five syllables concludes the laughable story as the 'punch line'. Often, the Dodoitsu is used to tell a story of love, and may tend to the erotic.
